Elon Musk's leadership style has caused a surge in union membership, according to Paul Nowak, the new head of the Trades Union Congress (TUC) in the UK. Since Musk took over Twitter in October, one of the TUC's affiliates, Prospect, has seen its Twitter membership increase tenfold.
Nowak attributes this increase to Musk's controversial actions, including mass layoffs and an email ultimatum to staff to work "extremely hardcore" or leave the company. Nowak argues that Musk's behavior makes him a "perfect recruitment tool" for the trade union movement, as it demonstrates the importance of strong employment protections.
While unions have traditionally focused on organizing within the gig economy and manufacturing sectors, the tech industry has also seen a rise in union activity in recent years. This includes agreements between unions and companies such as Uber and Deliveroo, as well as union recognition at some Apple stores and industrial action ballots at a UK Amazon warehouse.
